The Chapel

One never knows why one remembers some things so well. I have never forgotten C. S. Lewis' comment in a letter to Malcolm that, "I think our business as laymen is to take what we are given [in the church] and make the best of it." I admired this spirit when I first read it. Then I lost it when I began to work in churches. But I think I may have always been a layman even while working in the church, and I am always hoping to recover this spirit. I want to make the best of the church. By the Spirit of God, it certainly makes the best of me. And by the grace of God, He certainly makes the best of it.
