As For Me and My House

Joshua 24:14-15
As For Me and My House
Several years ago, I made one of the best parenting decisions I have ever made: to combine our breakfasts and dinners with devotion, teaching, singing, and prayer. These are the voyages, the captain’s logs, of these merry meetings, which form our family’s faith, one meal at a time.

Captain's Log: Table Time ~ Wednesday September 3rd, 2025 ~ Vespers

I had planned for us to do another installment of Investigators this evening, but those plans changed. As the morning was rolling out and I was polishing off some admin for Sunday coming, a song idea came to me. Stylistically, it was something I had been wanting to try for months, so I decided to turn my attention to it and see what would fall out. A song fell out. So in the evening we spent dinner learning and singing it together, with some explanations from me about the verses used. In particular, Joshua’s exhortation to Israel to be devoted to the Lord at the end of His faithful life. What a great word it is.

Kids just love to sing. Especially songs that contain features for participation, like call and response, rhythmic predictability, as well as phrases that play with rhythm a little bit. Kids pick these up immediately. At one point, Lewis called out in genuine surprise, “Dada, this is actually really good for learning!” Bless him. So in the mood was he that he went to the library and pulled down a hymn book. He found All Hail the Power, and we gave that a spin. I read Joshua 24:14-15 when we were all sung out, prayed, and we moved on.
