All Things Were Made Through Him
Captain's Log: Table Time ~ Tuesday, September 9th, 2025 ~ Lauds
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
We lingered this morning over all things coming into the world through the Word - the Son. After we read, I checked: ‘Did anything come into the world, apart from the word?’ Some thinking, some shaking of heads. ‘Is there any secret way by which some of the things in the world came apart from the Word?’ ‘No!’ Now with conviction. So the word is the source of everything that has come into the world… That’s quite a thought. The Word is quite impressive, isn’t He? Is anyone else in the world like this Word?
I thought of the first and last word. ‘You know what it’s like to get the first word in? When you jump in with the answer before the end of the question?’ Nods. ‘Well, there was a first word in the universe. The Word that was with God and was God. He is the Word that spoke before anything else was. He had the first word.
We finished on the declaration that the darkness cannot overcome the light of this Word. This is good to emphasise at a time when dualism is taken for granted. All our popular films assume there are two rival and evenly matched forces in the universe, struggling for dominance on a knife-edge. But this is not the way the world really is. The world is engulfed in a deep darkness. But as deep as this darkness is, it cannot overcome the light.
‘What should we remember today from these words? How can we be helped today by remembering them?’ It’s good to remember just how big Jesus is. When we are discouraged easily or fixated on small things, remember the Word from Whom all things come. The Word that also speaks to us.
What if, at some point today, we begin to think that we are the most important person in the world? That all the things we care about and that we are doing are the most important? It’s good to remember Jesus, the eternal Word. Some of the things that trouble us and preoccupy us might find their proper place if we lift our minds to Jesus and His importance in the world.
