A Day of Many Gifts

Psalm 136:1-9

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;

Passage

Psalm 136:1-9 - 'Give Thanks to the Lord'

Conditions

Christmas concert tonight in the west end. Lots of driving to and from. Children quite tired on the way, but in high spirits and joyful on the return journey. All performed, all did very well.

Time

Out of position for table time family worship, which raises the question, what to do? Anything at all? Leibniz didn’t ask “Why is something better than nothing?” And neither do I. I just assume that it is, and read the Bible to the children from the hallway as they climb under the covers.

Teaching

The evening was so full of gifts for the children a psalm expressing thanks to God was appropriate. I wasn’t aware that they knew the psalm well, and they responded with the “For his steadfast love endures forever.” I gave thanks for all the gifts of the day and the night to the Lord who made and rules both.

Reflection

In hallway Bible reading the teaching is the passage itself and the prayer. This is a good reminder. If all we can do some evenings is hear the words of God and pray, that’s quite a lot.

Sometimes I wonder what will be the things that the children remember particularly about our times. It’s impossible to know. But I like to think that if they arrive home late from dinner they’ll read the Bible from their hallway to their sleepy babes, because “Dada would do that sometimes.”
